"Jake's Day" was a huge success at Martell's Mini Melts this past Saturday, August 21st.  We had some wonderful cash donations, as well as a great day of both ice cream and slushie sales.  We will be sending Jake's family (via the Credit Union in Durham) a cheque for just over $1,700.  Thanks so much to our customers for their generous support of this very worthy cause and thanks also for the kind words of encouragement/well wishes that they all sent Jake's way throughout the day.  We were "blown away" by the immense level of compassion and support shown by everyone, young and old, who entered our store and who were there to support someone they had never even met.  It was truly a "heartwarming" day for all of us.  From the Martell family, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

Jake was clearly on cloud nine leading up to the benefit carnival on Saturday. This boosted his moral beyond belief and we let him enjoy the entire day. On behalf of Jake, we sincerely appreciate how the community rallied to support him throughout the event. He thoroughly enjoyed the police escort and fire truck ride into town to see his friends and play at the carnival. He loved shaving heads, playing on the bouncy rides, participating in the Tae Kwon Do demonstration and could not have been happier.

From a timing perspective, the date was perfect.

As a family, we still cannot believe the overwhelming support he has received from the benefit. We are astonished by the genuine generosity of the contributors,  the effort that went into  the preparation for the event and we don't know how we can thank everyone.  In our hearts, we will repay the generosity that our family, friends, community, employers, media and complete strangers have contributed.  We are also grateful for the Teams at  the Hospital for Sick Children its staff and volunteers the Government of Ontario and Canada, OHIP, the Community Care Access Center, the Canadian Cancer Society and so many other organizations. Special thanks as well to the Public Services such as the West Grey and Owen Sound Fire, Police and Paramedics. It was an honour to meet  and talk to so many of them.  We are grateful for their daily efforts to protect the public.

Many thanks to the committee organizers of Jake's Team for their superb planning, tireless efforts and excellent coordination throughout the day.
We must acknowledge that the SIGNIFICANT amount of donations and its usage  is a concern to our family. To be fair to those who have given so much we will be recommending to Jake’s Team to appoint a sub team to counsel us on the appropriate usage of the fund.  Our approach is to focus on nutrition, physical conditioning, clean air, holistic care and  purified water. A great deal of the donated funds will enable us to provide Jake the tools to fight these battles in addition to the standard care protocols in the health system. We anticipate this may last quite some time and it will take considerable funds to keep him healthy. Hospital. We have every intention to use the donations for Jake, his care and to help others through research of Neuroblastoma Cancer.

On a final note, We want to, once again, pay tribute to the SOUL of the Grey/Bruce and Wellington Counties. Catherine and I were born and raised in Durham and worked in Toronto for over ten years. When Jake
was born, we decided to move back home so he could learn the values and attributes of the small community. It was the best decision we have ever made as these people  came forward  to support us. We cannot forget the community stepping up after the Tornado in August 2009 and the flood that happened back in 1997. It truly reflects the unique character that Mrs. Mead cited in the theme to Jake's Team.

On behalf of Jake, Catherine and I am forever grateful and committed to returning the gracious outpouring of support to our community. We just cannot find the right words to describe their generosity.

Hi, this is a blanket email to all of our friends, family and coworkers that want an update on how Jake has been doing and what has been going on.

We have just finished Round 2 of 6 chemotherapy sessions.  5 days of chemo with 2 weeks off.  However, in both rounds Jakes blood counts go for a dive and we end up back in hospital after only 3 days at home due to the chemo doing its job technically… but it leaves him at a state of not having enough white bloods cells to fight the simplest bugs that even just live on our skin.  He is given antibiotics to fight off those possible bugs and our latest new experience was a blood transfusion as the chemo is already causing his bone marrow to react slower than one would like to rebuild the blood cells so the blood transfusion helps stabilize his “system” until his own “system” comes back around…. Imagine, this is only Round 2…

Before Round 3 starts they will be harvesting Jakes Stem cells.  This is because after Round 6 chemo his bone marrow will be completely shot and he will need his stem cells saved so that they can be put back in to regrow his blood (simple terms for all to understand, but that’s the gest of it.)

Jake is an amazing 7 year old boy (if I may say so myself!) His only upsetting moments is the fact of having to go back into hospital so soon from getting home but other than that (who can blame him..) he is the most amazing patient… today through the blood transfusion we were joking about becoming a vampire …. He is quite the character… I do not know where he gets that from?!  LOL

He takes everything amazingly and has got us wrapped around his finger!  We love it!

As always, we thank everyone for keeping in touch and thinking of us and supporting us through this journey we have been given…for those that have not yet heard what our little community has been up to check it out at www.jakesteam.ca and if you can make the event on the 24th we hope to get a chance to see and thank you all for your support. As well become a friend of mine on Facebook, I am under Cat Schafer as I will keep updating our progress on there as well.

Hope all is well with you and yours too.

Kind Regards,

Catherine
